The Role:

You will join an extension team (the News Broadcasting) of our client - News UK.

News UK is a company full of talented, dedicated and creative people. We are an ambitious and ever-growing organisation with a passion for storytelling, capturing moments, meaning and magic to make sense of the world. Our newspapers reach more than 30 million people each week and include The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times. News UK is also home to Unruly, a global ad tech company, and Wireless, a leading UK and Irish media company boasting independent local and national radio stations.

News Broadcasting (or “Broadcast” for short) is part of News UK’s thriving Technology department, an engineering community responsible for designing, developing, and operating customer-facing products and platforms. Broadcast specifically focuses on our national radio and audio-visual brands, including talkSPORT, Talk, Virgin Radio UK, and Times Radio. Our teams are ushering in a new era for radio, audio, and video by leveraging emerging technologies to build mobile apps, websites, and back-end platforms aligned with our strategic goals.

We are looking for a talented and passionate back-end focused mid-level Software Engineer, who will be a key component of a team delivering critical back-end systems which power not only our own products but third-party systems too. You’ll interact, communicate and collaborate with engineers based in London and Sofia, as well as with product owners and stakeholders, contributing to technical conversations and ensuring that what we build is best in class and fit for purpose. You’ll report to a Principal Engineer and will help them deliver on the technical strategy and implementation.

  • Comfortably present to internal teams as well as external Meetups and the like, while representing the engineering work at News UK

Qualifications

What we're looking for:

  • 3+ years of commercial experience programming in JavaScript and TypeScript, especially using Node JS and relevant API frameworks and technologies, building and integrating with REST and GraphQL APIs
  • An expertise with Terraform, Kubernetes, and similar cloud-native tools within AWS or similar ecosystems
  • Knowledge of code analysis and type checking tools for JavaScript (e.g. ESLint, Prettier, Istanbul)
  • Quality-led approach to development (documentation, monitoring & alerting, unit/component/contract/end-to-end testing)
  • Experience with CI/CD tools and practices and a DevOps mindset
  • Experience with performance optimisation, caching and security on highly available application deployments
  • A growth mindset and an eagerness to learn and improve continuously

Why work with us:

  • Great work-life balance
